Heather McMillen sprung from the swamps of Mississipi to the sunny hills of Los Angeles, weaving through the jungles of Cuba and the white sandy beaches of Florida along the way. She was born with her eyes wide open, taking mental snapshots of blossoms and breezes, eyelashes and irises, suspended moments and hidden desires. As she traveled, she quietly hovered on the fringe of every group, but never quite felt part of any group. This feeling heightened her desire to know all kinds of people, and to know them as they know themselves. Heather’s portraits reflect an innate insight into the most visceral parts of her subject, which she elicits from them unconsciously and organically – “I get drawn in, and some part of me recognizes some part of them, and it feels like I can know strangely intimate things about them without them being aware of it.” This ability translates into art that reflects not only the individual as a unique being but also as a tiny yet essential piece of the Bigger Puzzle, poking at the insides of both the subject and the viewer. Open yourself to her and let her turn you inside out.
